The security source confirmed that traffic violations were being taken seriously. "We always have checkpoints and officers who can arrest or fine people for violations," they added.

Akl said Lebanon's never-ending traffic nightmare was partly attributable to a lack of sufficient public transport options.

"The public transportation is in bad shape: buses are dirty, there is no AC, and they are always crowded. There are no bus stops, and bus drivers pick up people anywhere," he said.
